Our House Got Egged!!!!

Well, not LITERALLY...not by REAL eggs, but by plastic, pastel colored eggs. We got home from running our morning errands and found this on our doorstep...

This is such a cute idea! Thank you to whoever "egged" our house... never thought I would say that : )

Field Trip: Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

Yesterday we took a field trip to the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve.

Six Mile Cypress Slough (pronounced "slew") Preserve has over a mile of boardwalk trail that weaves around a beautiful 2,500 acre wetlands preserve. If your lucky, you'll spy alligators, a variety of birds, snakes, turtles, wild pigs and maybe even a bobcat! ...been there twice and have never seen one...if I did, I'd probably run up a tree screaming.

On today's adventure we saw two large gators sunning themselves, a baby alligator floating on a log, and lots of turtles and birds.

Throughout the boardwalk trail you'll run across beautiful quotes embossed on plaques. I especially like this one...

You'll also occasionally see animal tracks stamped into the wood planks that lead to a description and picture of the animal they belong to. Cool! Logan really enjoyed this.

This place is AH-mazing ...and is FREE! It's run by Friends of the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, a not-for-profit advocacy and support organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting the preserve.

For more on the preserve, you can visit their web site HERE.

There's an alligator sunning itself in the pond over my shoulder! Grrrr

Just beautiful!

Shingles Consolation Prize Day

The meds from Urgent Care are finally speeding up this whole Shingles nonsense. So with Logan in tow, my mother and I decided to venture out and descend upon the shopping mecca called Miromar Outlets.

This place has got to be the most beautiful outlet mall I've ever seen! What better way to shop discount than strolling under royal palms, along perfectly manicured rows of begonias, and around beautiful stone fountains. And all this while the sun is shining down in all it's glory.

*Sorry to my friends in less desirable latitudes for the detailed description.

Upon entering the mall, we quickly spot the Vera Bradley store. And what's that sign in the window? ...50% off the ENTIRE store?! Running...

I picked up this super cute sleeve for my iPad for only $15!

Like a true man, the expression on Logan's face says it all... he is thrilled to be shopping with two women...

Now onto my consolation prize. I deserve one, right? Did you see my last post about having Shingles? SHINGLES. That my husband so thoughtfully gave me? Wasn't that sweet of him? Thanks babe.

What's that over there I spy? The Coach Factory store? And they are having a 50% off sale too?! Running faster....

And introducing the newest member of my closet (drumroll, please)...

Hubby you ARE forgiven!

Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho It's off to Urgent Care I Go

About four days ago I developed an itchy rash on my right side lower back area. I thought it was a heat rash or such. Then it spread to my stomach and developed blisters. And I when I woke up today it had spread even more (I won't get into the details) and I'm having pain in my right hip.

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it's off to Southwest Florida Urgent Care I go.

The nurse takes one look at it and thinks it's Shingles. The doctor confirms it. So. Not. Cool.

I'm too young for Shingles. The nurse says it's brought on usually by stress. But I'm on vacation I tell her. In Florida. You know, palm trees, sun. Stress, really? I think not. They give me a prescription and tell me it may or may not help. Apparently, I should have come in within the first 48 hours the symptoms showed up for it to be most effective.

Now, let me rewind to the week before I left for Florida. Hubby was coming down with Shingles. "Oh don't worry", he says, "It's not contagious". Yeah. Right. Thanks babe.

Not exactly how I want to spend my last week in Florida. But, hey, at least I can now chime in with all the other old farts about my medical ailment.

Shingles SUCKS! Don't think you are too young to get it. It's sooo painful, not to mention ugly and can leave long term nerve damage. I strongly urge you to ask your physician about getting the vaccine next time you have an appointment. ANYONE who has had the Chicken Pox is at risk.

Fleamasters Fleamarket... it's HUUGE!

Venezia by PVII

This morning we took a field trip to Fleamasters Fleamarket in Ft. Myers. This place is HUUUGE! Gotta say it like Billy and Caroline in those annoying Fuccillo Kia car TV commercials...which by the way, they have a dealership down here in Ft. Myers. The commercials are equally as annoying as in Rochester, except there are palm trees in the background instead of snow. But really, it's so big they give you an entire guide to help you navigate it...and we still got lost.

I've heard great things about this place from other residents at Woodsmoke. The only drawback is that it's on MLK Blvd...and you know what that means. It's in the G-H-E-T-T-O. But, I figure if the old people can go there and manage to not get scammed or car jacked, it can't be that bad.

As soon as we pull in the entrance I see a sign for "VIP parking $5". Only $5 to not have to park WAY out in a dusty field and push Logan in his stroller over gravel for a half mile. Yes, please.

This place has rows...

...upon rows...

...upon rows of everything you can think of and some item's you can't. Ha!

Want a red neck wine glass? They've got 'em!

Maybe some ponytails for your bald baby? They've got those too!

And I have never seen a more complete selection of fanny packs anywhere in my life.

It was a fun trip. Logan picked up a plastic snake and toy boat from the very cute "Noah's Ark" toy shop (it's all probably made in China) and got a ride on their coin operated carousel. Mommy even found an uber special birthday gift for daddy's upcoming 40th : )

The Life of a Retiree

I don't know what it is about Florida...but once they are down here, my parents turn into complete and total old farts...sorry mom and dad, but 'ya do. It's said with love.

My dad spends his days smoking cigars and making baskets out of pine needles. He takes Logan on walks and has him collect the pine needles for him. Child labor??? The poor kid isn't even getting paid. Now the baskets are pretty cool I'll give him that...but he completely ignores everyone around him when he is basket weaving. It's like he goes into an obsessive trance. Here he is working on his current masterpiece...

And this one was his first project...

My mom on the other hand can't begin her day until the New York Times Crossword, Jumble and Sudoku puzzles are completed..which is usually by Noon. Considering she doesn't get up until 10am, that's not too shabby.

When she's done and decides to finally get "dressed", she is off on a quest to find wood birds perched on driftwood...her new obsession.

I look forward to their return to New York when hopefully the Florida haze wears off! In the meantime, I may have to stage an intervention.

Life at Woodsmoke

Life is not too bad here at Woodsmoke. The calendar of events offers activities for everyone. From bingo, euchre and pinochle to wood carving, jewelry making and scrap booking. Yes indeed, there is something for everyone.

Don't like socializing? No problem! You'll have to lock yourself up inside, draw the blinds and pretend you're not home though...and even that might not stop them.

There is always somebody out walking their dog, riding in their golf cart with their dog or biking with their dog (well, not really, but I wouldn't put it past them) looking for some poor unsuspecting person to corner for conversation.

My parent's have solved that problem by putting up this gorgeous privacy screen made from old shutters.

But the people still slow down to peer around it looking for my dad who never turns down the chance to talk to somebody...anybody.

Florida Style ...Cool Weather Cool : )

The weather is oh so SLOWLY warming up here in South Florida. Hubby flew down for a couple days and no joke, I should have had him bring my North Face with him.

Last night we went out for cocktails with some old friends and although I would have loved to had worn a super cute maxi dress and sandals, I was reduced to jeans and the only sweater I brought...the one I wore down from the tundra on the plane.

Old McDonald

Today while we were out doing a little shopping, we decided to stop at a random McDonald's for lunch with Logan. It's a nice day here and it had an outdoor play area out front that drew us in.

Upon entering, we knew something was different about THIS McDonald's...Dorothy, we're not in Kansas anymore. Now, most McDonald's are pretty uniform in design. They tend to be your standard McDonald's or the new updated "cafe" version. This one did not fit into either mold. So different and even more gross than most McDonald's can already be...this twilight zone McDonald's had a game theme. Yes, that's right, a game theme... McDonald's was spelled out in giant Scrabble letters above the registers. The dated booths looked like they were out of an old diner and on the wall were framed board games from the 50's all the way up to the 80's. Which was probably when this McDonald's was constructed and literally hasn't been touched since...LITERALLY...I mean cleaned too. The windows and framed wall "art" were nasty dirty with greasy fingerprints.

There was no way Logan was playing in the play "structure" out front. Who knows if it had ever been cleaned by anything other than the Florida rain ...and it didn't look too sturdy either.

Needless to say, we ate as fast as you can get a two year old to eat and headed back out into this century.

Wedge Sneakers...Do or Don't?

I first spotted wedge sneakers on another blog a couple months back and thought they were hideous.

I just don't get it...a sneaker with a wedge. Are they sneakers for people who want to appear taller? But I can't imagine you can run or work out in them....so c'mon people...wear a wedge OR wear a sneaker!!

I see them EVERYWHERE now. Designers and stores from Target to Marc Jacobs, Sketchers and Chloe. Even Michael Kors...how could you?!

It's a weird trend I just don't understand.

What do you think?

Best of Everything

Today we went to (one) of my absolutely favorite stores ever...Best of Everything in Bonita Springs. It doesn't look like much on the outside...but once you notice all the chairs on the porch and the men sitting in them complaining about how much they hate coming here, you know there's got to be feminine magic inside.

Now, one side of the store is a gift shop of various Florida "stuff"...anything you can think of made out of shells, nick-knacks (old lady stuff), cheap souvenirs, etc., etc.

Now, the other side of the store...that's a completely different story! Junk jewelry heaven!!!!

My purchases...

Bubble Necklace- $14
Cuff Bracelet- $12
Toggle Clasp Bracelet- $8
Ring- $12
